This class is about a simple way to learn and paint with watercolors. It is for anyone who loves the look, magic, and playfulness of the medium. If you are a beginner, anyone who tried watercolor in the past and found it too difficult, or just need a refresher, the class is for you. No complex color study, masks or special effects in this class.
Students will learn the craft by painting simultaneously with the teacher. Students will see the teacher painting live, and as it progress on a large screen monitor. In each class we start with a sketch book composition and progress to the application of paint, details, washes, and finishing the painting. Periodically, Joshua will stop his demonstration for individual instruction. The goal is learning to paint watercolors by simplifying the process and with playfulness and joy.
I use Winsor & Newton Professional Water color tube paints, students can use whatever is affordable. (Personally I find the dry paint in 1/2 pans NOT satisfactory). You can get by with buying just 1-2 blue, 1-2 yellow, 1-2 reds + umber & sienna.
Paint: -Winsor Blue (green shade) -French Ultramarine -Cobalt Blue -Cerulean Blue -Burnt Umber -Burnt sienna -Light Red -Cadmium Red -Raw Umber -Raw Siena -Aurelian Yellow -Cadmium Lemon
Extra paints: -Payne’s Gray (or Ivory Black) -Cobalt Violet -Viridian Green -Alizarin Crimson -Cadmium Orange -Titanium White
Paper: This is my preferred list (22”x30”, 140 lb or 200 lb single sheet, available in blocks as well): Bockingford, Arches, Fabriano; however - watercolor paper can get $$$$, students should get whatever watercolor paper fits their budget. Don’t spent a lot to start.
Brushes: Small variety of sizes with some large ones. No need to get expensive brushes, the budget pre-flow are good to start.
Watercolor Palette: Empty Watercolor Palette tins and Watercolor Half Pans to fit in them. 2.75" x 8.75" enamel like Pallet tin with 24 pans is a good versatile one, use whatever fit your budget: porcelain Palette ($$$) or plastic Palette ($)
Odds & Ends: -cup for water -paper towels or 1-3 rags -drafting tape –Clips -Board for the paper sheet -4B pencil -Kneaded Rubber eraser
