Curas: Males del Corazón / Remedies: Ailments of the Heart
What's Happening at ASLD, Artist Residency, Upcoming Exhibitions
Artist-in-Residence Juan Carlos Escobedo, zooms out from the racialized landscapes to observe the phenomena around them, and reflects on generational curas acquired from familial and cultural knowledge.
Juan Carlos Escobedo has explored classism, racism and colorism through his pseudo fashion line titled “x J.ESC.” He uses the form of clothes, miniature landscapes, and the inert qualities of materials to parallel the preconceived prejudices of non-aspirational socioeconomic statuses and communities of color. Escobedo arrived as ASLD’s artist-in-residence in January 2026 and in Curas: Males del Corazón, he zooms out from the racialized landscapes to observe the phenomena around them. In doing so, he reflects on generational curas acquired from familial and cultural knowledge and creates vignettes that begin to articulate how non-western beliefs consider emotional, psychological, and physical pains as a whole system—beginning another layer of resistance against epistemic whiteness.
Exhibition dates: June 12-July 26, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, June 12, 2026 | 5:30-8:00PM
