In a new twist on our Visiting Artist Series, we’re visiting the artist! Artventures invites you to get out of town and meet artists throughout the state (and beyond). Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging accommodations.
Trinidad, CO is still a relatively undiscovered and charming ‘old-west’ style town with a lot of beautiful historic architecture, located just off I-70 on the southern border of Colorado. The A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art, an old dry goods store from the early 1900s, with most of its original features intact, became home in 1981 to the paintings and memorabilia of local resident and cowboy artist, Arthur Roy Mitchell. Today, the Museum is excited to share Mitchell’s story and beautiful works and claim its rightful position on the list of worthy contributors to Colorado’s rich, western history.
It is in this setting, in our recently activated 3rd floor exhibition space, that we will host an abstract painting workshop. Classes will offer basic painting guidance from instructor Karen Roehl, with an emphasis on abstract painting techniques that will include fun and quick loosening-up exercises designed to help participants “let go” and unleash their creative instinct.
In addition, access to behind-the-scene archives, a tour of the Museum with a fun and informative talk by its Executive Director, Allyson Sheumaker, and First Friday festivities will be offered. Other amenities in the area include hiking, biking, and live music.
We at the Museum, invite you to come paint, explore and be inspired by the beauty of this area and experience how the influence of an authentic, old western town might inspire your creativity.
