Resident Artist: Natalia Roberts
11/14/2022 - 07/20/2023
Image Gallery
Originally from Detroit, Natalia Roberts is a multidisciplinary artist who works with dance as a performer, choreographer, filmmaker, and photographer. Trained as an architect, her work has a strong design element but is always rooted in people. She is fascinated by telling stories through movement and the human form.
Starting at age 20 she received her dance training first from Washington University in St. Louis, and later in NYC with the Peridance 2-year Certificate Program in Ballet and Contemporary dance. She went on to work with companies across NYC performing and choreographing before suffering a major injury in 2018. Unable to dance, she returned to her design roots and began apprenticing with dance photographer Rachel Neville and working with film.
Since then Natalia has created several photo series, including Dancers In The City and a COVID-19 Polaroid photo journal. She has been selected as a dance-and-film artist-in-residence at Cucalorus, a filmmaker-in-residence with ODC dance, and received a $20,000 individual artist grant from the San Francisco Artist Commission to support her work.
She recently moved to Denver, where she continues to work as a photographer, filmmaker, and performer. She is producing her own choreographic work with the support of the CCD residency program, can be seen performing most recently in Oddknock’s “From on High” and Netflix’s “The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience.” Through her work she aims to tell the stories of those who are often overlooked, and let these overlook subjects knows that their beauty, physicality, and potential are seen.
Natalia will be an artist-in-residence at the Art Students League of Denver beginning in November 2022. During her residency, she will connect with the ASLD community through open studio events Inside the Studio (stay tuned for upcoming dates!) and a teen workshop in early 2023.
